In southeast Wisconsin, the base under a patio matters more than the paver on top. Water freezes and expands in the ground - frost heave - and lifts anything built on a thin or poorly drained base. What decides whether a patio stays flat:

5. Plan around the build season
Southeast Wisconsin's build window runs roughly April through November. Planning over the winter or early spring means design and scheduling are done so crews can start the moment the ground opens up.
