Why the base still matters
An outdoor kitchen island or a masonry fireplace can weigh a great deal, and anything heavy set on a thin or poorly drained base in a freeze-thaw climate will eventually settle or crack away from the patio around it. We build the footing and base for these features the same way we build everything - deep, compacted, and drained - because a leaning grill island or a cracked fireplace hearth is exactly the kind of failure that is miserable to fix later.
